This (currently untitled) project looks at motion and movement, and how we can manipulate or distort basic objects to create or capture a motion. I want to focus on how we can explore the idea of motion as a moment and the different approaches used to visually record or create it. I will be using the work of two artists who are working in quite visually similar styles and themes, but present their work and ideas in two contrasting approaches. Through the medium of video and photocopied image, these artists have managed to capture movement and motion in two distinct approaches - repetitive and static - and present it to us in a very artificial, stylised manner. The theme of motion cropped up when I was trying to find common ground between the two artists I selected, Amy Cadwallader and Beth Wise, and they work with a lot of concepts and techniques that I’m personally really interested in exploring further throughout this project, which is why I’ve decided to work with them.
Amy Cadwallader is a Liverpool-based artist who works in video and installation, taking recordings of lights and shiny reflective objects, and distorts them into sequences of motion and colour. The visual content consists of cutting out and pairing different segments into new patterns, creating repetitive visuals.

I will be using various of Amy’s digitally-created video pieces from her 2021 series and projecting them directly onto the wall. I will work directly with Amy to decide which video pieces she would like to use. (Some personal favourites include: “Week 39 - Tectonic Plates” / “Week 24 - Somewhat Symmetrical Mildly Chaotic” - “Week 6 - Doubles” - “Week 19 - Rhythm or lack of”
Beth Wise is a Preston-based artist who focuses on duration, human trace and material manipulation. She uses knitting, photocopies, concrete, foam and image making to create playful and experimental pieces that she uses to talk about the themes of her practise. She is inspired by discarded thoughts, notes scribbled on library book pages, shapes she stumbles upon, and fragmented ideas.

I have two options for what pieces of Beth’s work I would like to exhibit. The first option is a large-scale digital print from her “soft concrete” (2018) body of work. The second is a selection of digital prints from her “stretch” (2021) series. All considered works are printed onto fabric, and can be hung directly onto the wall. (screenshots of work pasted below)
Accompanying the exhibition will be a small publication/research document focusing on other themes and concepts present within the work that I’ve come across when developing this project. I kept stumbling across recurring themes present in both artists' work, like intangibility, interaction, and duration, and I’d like to try and explore them in relation to their work in more detail. (but I feel like this would be done more successfully through my own written practise - allowing parts of my own work to be present within the exhibition rather than just being a “curator”).

I’d also want to feature conversations with the artists about their practise, and discuss some of the other unused themes that have cropped up throughout, as I consider this project more as a collaboration between myself and the artists, rather than me simply just choosing their work to display. I will also include some of my own curatorial notes to serve as evidence on how this exhibition got from point A to point B as a continuation of my personal creative practise, wanting to look at the processes behind an exhibition and allow an explicit and honest insight into the curatorial development.
SCHEDULE
Ideally I think I’d need 6 weeks minimum to facilitate this project. One week - or even less - would be needed for installation as it would be fairly simple. I would need to give myself a few weeks to prepare other aspects of the project - editing/printing the publication, marketing, liaising with the artists to confirm details for installation

Week 1-4 - Detailed plans & preparation for the exhibition, including writing/editing/printing the assisting publication, planning install, creating a floor plan, general marketing & promo, etc.
Week 5 - Install / Finalising everything
Week 6 - Exhibition Opens with a PV & runs for however long has been agreed

Things to consider that make scheduling/installing a bit easier:
Both of the artists have already agreed to let me use their work and are happy with me choosing which pieces/exhibiting however I want
I already know how I want to install the pieces and what materials/tools/stuff I’d need to be able to do this - screws, clips, levels, extension cables, etc.
I have a fair bit of the written material I’d like to use to accompany the exhibition already completed
I already have an extensive network & platform to market the exhibition through

Some things to consider that could affect the schedule or throw things off:
I want to project Amy’s video, so what if I don’t manage to get a projector? I’d need to have a back-up plan for this
Things not getting printed in time / being printed incorrectly
What if the work I’ve selected doesn’t look right in the space?
What if I don’t get my publication/written work printed in time?
Does the gallery space actually have plug sockets? If so, are they close to the exhibition space? I don’t want wires trailing everywhere
